The drug, currently called EBC-46, was discovered in the seeds of the blushwood rainforest tree, which can only be found in the rainforests of North Queensland. Now, drug firm QBiotics wants to use the treatment in a human trial.

 The testing has been taking place at a laboratory in Yungabarra, which Cairns.com noted is becoming an important lab in both scientific and medical circles, despite its small size.

Australian Blushwood Tree Fights Cancer

She said the drug works like a detonator inside tumours, prompting inactive beneficial white cells to begin to fight and destroy the cancer.

The company has spent six years developing the drug since the previously unknown molecule in the native Australian plant blushwood was discovered, and hopes to raise enough funds to begin human trials in 2011.

Gordon said the compound proves the value of retaining Australia's tropical rainforests.

EBC-46 from Australian Blushwood Tree Fights Cancer

Sunrise sent Simon Reeve to North Queensland to report on the possible cancer-curing properties of a rainforest chemical.

The story was folllowed up by Doctor John D'Arcy who appeared on SUnrise today to recount his adventure discovering more on the mysterious chemical EBC-46.

After Simon's report went to air, testing began was showing promise in treating tumours in animals.

Now, EBC-46 - found in the blushwood tree seed - will take 5-7 years to develop for use in humans.
